PLDT Aims to Close the Mobile Subscriber Gap with Globe

As Globe makes steady strides in the telecom industry with the lead in its mobile subscriber base, its competitor, PLDT, is not far behind. The telecom giant has steadily increased its net income by 10 percent in H1 2023 and is strategically poised to bridge the mobile subscriber gap with Globe.

At the H1 2023 earnings briefing held in the bustling city of Makati, PLDT’s President and CEO, Al Panlilio, acknowledged the current state of play. In the dance of numbers, he revealed that Globe, led by the Ayala Corporation, has an edge with 1.2 million more registered SIMs.

While closing this gap is a priority in PLDT’s strategy, Panlilio exudes confidence about overtaking Globe in the high stakes mobile business in the foreseeable future. He described the competition as a “neck and neck” race, indicating that the game isn’t over yet.

Despite the uncertainty of when exactly his company can claim the leading position, Panlilio is committed to steadfastly enhancing the quality of PLDT’s services and expanding its footprint in the country.

PLDT’s financial figures are painting an encouraging picture as well. The company showcased a solid performance in the first half of 2023 with a revenue of Php18.5 billion. This is a marked 10 percent increase compared to the same period in the previous year. Mirroring this positive trend, the telecom company’s gross income and total core income rose by 3 percent, standing at Php52.1 billion and Php17.6 billion, respectively.

Dominating PLDT’s consolidated services revenue by capturing an impressive 82 percent share, the broadband and data income has exhibited a boost with a 4 percent increase, ballooning to Php77.5 billion.

Furthermore, the fiber-only services revenue, a promising segment in PLDT’s portfolio, observed an 11 percent uptick, hitting a milestone with a whopping Php25.7 billion.

To conclude, the robust H1 2023 results have rejuvenated PLDT’s spirits and the company seems eager to take on the challenges ahead to bridge the mobile subscriber gap with Globe. With a robust plan in place and strong determination, PLDT is certainly a force to reckon with in this captivating dance of numbers in the telecom industry.
